LPS Novice Division - Rules For Competition

LPS Novice Division  - Approved by the LPS Board of Directors, February 2007

FOR COMPETITIONS AT LPS BEGINNING APRIL 11, 2007

WHO MAY COMPETE IN THE NOVICE DIVISION:

This Division is intended for those just getting into photography.  People who are experienced or moderately experienced photographers are urged to compete at the Advanced level.

Members may compete in the LPS Novice Division if:

They have earned less than 50 combined total LPS competition points (from total competitions in all groups and divisions) in the last two calendar years combined before the current year of competition.  For a listing of the past two years’ point totals for members, click here:   Point Winners

Members may NOT compete in the LPS Novice Division, even if they meet the above criterion, if:

Once members have earned 50 combined total LPS competition points (from total competitions in all areas), they may continue submitting entries in the Novice Division until Dec. 31 of that calendar year, or they may begin submitting entries in the Regular Division at the next LPS meeting.  However, once they begin submitting entries in the Regular Division, they may no longer submit entries in the Novice Division.  Exception:  See above for when a person may become eligible to compete again in the Novice Division.  Exception:  Novices may submit a total of 2 entries in the regular Digital Division

WHAT MAY BE ENTERED IN THE NOVICE DIVISION:

Members entering the Novice Division may only submit a total of three entries.  There will not be a slide competition or separate Novice Digital competition available.  Novices may submit 2 entries in the regular Digital Division.  Prints entered in the Novice Division may be either color or monochrome.  Novices may submit two entries in the regular Digital Division each month.

Prints entered in the Novice Division must be presented in the same 16” X 20” format as in the Regular Division.  The total presentation should be 16” x 20”.  The actual photos may be any size or shape, but it is suggested that the total number of square inches be not less than 71 square inches.  Instructions on how to mat your own photos can be found on the "Tips, Tricks and Tidbits" page.

Entries that receive points in the Novice Division may be entered again in later Regular LPS competitions once a Novice has advanced to the regular divisions.  If the entries subsequently win points in the Regular Divisions, they may not be entered in any additional competitions, except for the year-end competition.

Regular Divisions in which Novices may not compete include Color Prints and Monochrome Prints.  Novices MAY compete in the Regular Digital Division in addition to competing in the Novice Division, but they are limited to 2 entries in Digitals, and must follow the submission rules as stated in "Competition Rules."

JUDGING FOR THE NOVICE DIVISION:

Judging for this division may be done by the regular judge on meeting nights, or by two LPS club members, as provided by the By-Laws.

There will be a Year-End Competition for the Novice Division, and the same rules will apply to it as govern the Regular Year-End Competition.  The rules for Year-End Awards, both for most cumulative points in each area of the Novice Division, and for best end-of-year photos in each area of the Novice Division will be the same as for the Regular Division, except that the people will be recognized with framed certificates.

  -------------------------------------------------

Note:  Competition in the LPS Regular Division is open to everyone who is a member.  No one MUST compete at the Novice level.  Novices can always choose to compete at the Advanced Level.
